A sterling silver match safe was hand engraved in England in the late 1800's, signed "Birmingham," and could be a ring box as well.
There are vents in the box and traces of a gold wash inside to prevent corrosion from matches. Hall marks underneath are shown, the removable bottom plate is not attached and is not silver
Often called a "Vesta," the name is after the Roman god of fire and hearth.
Measurements of this elegant little antique are 3" long, 1 5/8" wide and 7/8" tall.
