An elegant French marble mantel clock set includes side urns, and dates from the 1890's. Behind a beveled glass door, the hand painted porcelain dial is signed "Legry Fils (Sons), Medaille d'Or (Gold Medal Winners), Clermont Ferrand." These twin cities are in the beautiful Auvergne region, midway between Paris and the Mediterranean Sea. The dormant volcano, Puy de Dome is nearby. A Roman settlement BC, the castle was ravaged by Vikings in the 800's.
Professionally cleaned and oiled, the original brass movement keeps excellent time and runs a week on a winding. A silvery toned bell strikes the half hour and counts the hour. Delicately grained marble bases are beautiful. The sculptures depict cherubs with birds and musical motifs, cast in spelter, a pewter like metal alloy. The original patinated bronze finish is very well preserved, accented with bright bronze mounts on this antique set from France.
Clock size is 12" wide, 6" deep and 16" tall, urns are 5" wide, 4 1/2" deep and 13" tall.
