Very charming, this jewel was called a "Davenport" desk after its Victorian inventor. It is also referred to as a "ship captain's" desk, popular on board because of its compact or small size.
Hand made of rosewood during the Civil War era about 1865, there is a tiny swivel drawer for pens and a cut glass inkwell. The leather writing surface lifts, exposing a birdseye maple interior with tiny compartments and a drawer, note shrinkage separations and inkstains on the bottom. On the right side are four large drawers, all with beautifully hand-cut dovetails, drawerfronts on the left are false for the sake of symmetry.
The gleaming old finish is superb on all four sides, and there are 2 exquisite spiral columns on the front.
Dimensions are 22" wide, 22" deep and 34" tall to the top of the book gallery, the desk slopes down to 31" high at the front, legroom is over 26" high.
