This hand-carved Georgian period oak tall case clock was made for a country house in Shropshire, England, and signed "James Evans." "Salop" is an archaic abbreviation for Shropshire, a county in the West Midlands adjoining Wales. The principal town is Shrewsbury, where James Evans was active as a watch and clockmaker in 1763, according to G.H.Baillies' Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World."
Design of the dial dates this clock to the late 1700's. The beautiful solid oak case is well proportioned and sports Celtic motifs, including stylized dragons on the door. There are remarkably few mars and shrinkage separations for its age. Probably because of a small warp in the door, the left molding was planed down to fit, see photo.
The brass plate dial has lovely antique patina. Numerals and signature are hand-engraved, there are filigree cast decorations with faces in the corners. Weights, pendulum and crank are later replacements.
The original brass 8 day movement keeps excellent time and has been professionally cleaned and oiled. There is a bell strike on the hour. Size of this historic furniture is 22" wide, 11" deep and 7' 7" tall.
