A bride's dowry trunk with traces of original folk art painting are visible on this pine chest or "Kiste," either with "Rosemaling" from Norway or from Sweden. Near the keyhole are faded initials of the bride, "SSDS?" and the year, "18--" illegible.
Hand crafted in the mid 1800's with wooden pegs, this well worn trunk or chest has lots of losses and wear for antique character. Corners have hand cut dovetail joints. Hinges are original wrought iron, repaired with later bolts on the back side. The lock is missing. Handles are about 100 years old but not original on this Scandinavian furniture.
Size is 39" long, 20" deep and 17 1/2" tall.
