Sampler 1856 Antique Rachel Howells Adam & Eve Needlework

Proper young ladies all hand stitched a "sampler" that displayed their needlework accomplishments, this colorful textile is signed, "Rachel Howells 1856."

The Biblical Adam and Eve story with a serpent and tree of forbidden fruit is central to the composition. Her parents "David and Mary," the family home and birds are included. Wool yarn against a linen ground still has vivid colors, there are stains, see photos.

The shaped "curly" maple later frame is beautiful on this American folk art. Overall dimensions of this picturesque antique are 26 1/2" x 30 1/2."
