A magnificent chest or marriage dowry trunk from Sweden was hand crafted around 1800. The satiny finish is in excellent condition, preserving a few mars and dings for character.
A pine frame surrounds inlaid panels of exquisite inlaid marquetry in traditional folk patterns, incorporating various local fruit and nut hardwoods. One end bears initials Y and H over a W, presumably the wedding couple for whom this wonderful chest was intended.
There are various losses to the inlay work, see photos. The original wrought iron lock works with a giant key. Engraved iron hinges appear original, lower arms were remounted long ago. Inside is a small covered box for keepsakes. Large bun feet are old but later on this European antique furniture.
Measurements are 54" long, 22" deep and 25" tall.
