A cousin of the famous "Wooten" desk, also from Indianapolis, this "Moore Quot Office Queen Cabinet Desk" was patented in 1882, and the company went out of business in 1890. "Quot" is from "Quotation," as in copying.
Solid walnut with matched burl panels, the old finish is very well preserved with warm patina and has been revarnished. There are irregularities in the burl plus shrinkage separations from age, see photos.
Tiny drawers inside have hand cut dovetail joints on this American made antique desk. There is no key, but the large knob latches the desk closed. A pull out writing surface is inlaid with leather, the desk rolls on large wheels. In the door are 35 leatherette and pasteboard file boxes with original ring pulls and label holders. A cast bronze mail slot is original.
We can find no signature on this historic furniture, but it is unmistakably a Moore from Indiana. It was advertised as closable without moving a single piece of paper inside.
Size is 36" wide, 28" deep and 51" tall. The writing desk is 31" from the floor.
