Signed "E. Bartholomew, Sherborn," the design of this clock suggests that it dates from the early to mid 1700's. The fine-grained oak case has mahogany panels and finial on top, the door glass is old and wavy but probably not original.
Professionally cleaned and oiled, the 8 day brass movement is in fine running order, and strikes the hour. Brass filigree ornaments with faces surround the dial, the hour or chapter ring is hand engraved and signed. The inner brass of the dial has a rough, hammered finish. Tapered columns have original brass ends, the winding crank is a replacement.
Sherborn is a charming little town in Dorset, west of London and Portsmouth. Proportions and scale of this antique clock are beautiful, size is 19" wide, 10" deep and 6'11" tall.
