A French sculpture of a young woman "Bergere,"or Shepherdess, from about 1900 is signed "Mestais." Little is known about the artist, whose works are in museums and collections across Europe. There is also a Paris foundry mark and "France." This statue is fitted with two standard candelabra base sockets and a switch on the cord, intended as a newel post lamp to illuminate a staircase.
The original deep green and bronze patina is in very good condition on this antique work of art, which was cast in spelter, a white metal alloy similar to pewter.
The base was hand grained with an original red marble finish. Barefoot, the figure stands in a field, captured midstride as she carries a jug of water.
Size is 25" tall, 13" wide and 9" deep, the base is 7 1/4" diameter.
Shipping is $125 in the US.
