An exquisite hand carved Brittany folk carved desk has full figure sculptures of musicians with pipes and a flute. Richly carved all around in solid chestnut and oak, there is an upper gallery with acorns.
The original satin finish has a deep soft luster, and the drop front desk has a leather insert, opening to expose tiny drawers and compartments in a contrasting golden oak color.
The Breton province of northwest France was its own country with native language and furniture design, a tradition proudly shown in this antique desk hand crafted about 1900.
All panels are raised and skillfully carved, as are the hand dovetailed drawer fronts. The center panel showing a bagpiper and a maiden is especially artistic and charming.
Measurements are 33" wide, 18" deep, 5'10" tall, and the writing surface is 29" above the floor.
