Jesus Santo Figure, 1700's Antique Spanish Colonial Sculpture
A "santo" or miniature sculpture of the crucified Jesus from the Spanish Colonial Americas dates from the 1700's.
Hand carved of wood, the worn gesso and painting appears original where there are chips. There are losses including missing arms on this statue, see photos. Holes indicate this piece was hung.
Such tiny figures were used to teach Christianity to native Americans who were largely illiterate.
