A lovely bronze sculpture of a girl in country dress in an almost pouting posture is signed by famous sculptor, "Ruth Milles," and dates from about 1910.
Ruth Anna Maria Milles was born in Sweden in 1873, sister of the famous sculptor, Carl Milles. Growing up near Uppsala, she later lived in Stockholm, Paris and after 1932 in Italy, where she died in Rome in 1941. She studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts and exhibited all over the world, including at the San Francisco 1915 World's Fair. Milles also wrote poetry and illustrated books.
This work of art reflects characteristic themes of longing and dreamy fantasies of days gone by. The dark chocolate patina has green highlights and exquisite detail. There are foundry marks as shown, height of this antique statue is almost 10" tall.
