Although it appears to be a chest of drawers, this is actually a "secret" secretary desk, with yet another secret drawer inside. Crafted of mahogany during the Empire period about 1835, the gleaming dark finish is excellent with beautiful antique patina. There are shrinkage cracks, separations, and stains as one would expect from a piece dating from the 1830's.
The desk front drops down, revealing a contrasting interior of tiny drawers and cubicles in golden satinwood, birdseye maple and burl.
Behind the tiny locked door is a locking drawer that hides a sliding secret drawer behind, released with a pushbutton from below.
Drawer fronts are matched flame grain with banding, sides are hand-dovetailed and bottoms are chamfered.
Grand American furniture entirely hand-crafted from the East Coast, there are various restorations over the years. The pull-out writing surface is natural saddle leather.
Dimensions of this stately antique desk with understated and elegant lines are 43" wide, 25" deep, 45" tall and the writing area is 29" high.
