An oval curved glass vitrine or curio display cabinet from about 1890 has the renowned "Vernis Martin" finish, hand painted scenes, original bronze mounts and a marble top.
The famous "Vernis Martin" technique involves a frosty bronze gold background and was developed in the 18th Century for the kings of France by the royal cabinetmaker, Martin.
This marvelous vitrine cabinet has glowing antique patina and original wavy curved glass all around. Lock and key still work. Expertly hand crafted in France, this antique furniture appears all original and unrestored - there are tiny shrinkage separations from age, also a crack and a scratch in the marble, see photos. The pierced gallery is supported by exquisite ram heads, all cast in rosy bronze.
Charming hand painted courting scenes recall the 18th Century manner. An interior light was added later with standard American wiring. The lower removable shelf and interior have worn original velvet, and could be recovered if desired. Plate glass shelves have polished edges and are removable.
Measurements of this historic and palatial vitrine are 33" long, 25 1/2" deep and 63" tall.
