A Chinese 8 panel "Coromandel" screen from about 40 years ago has subtle colors against a black ground.
The traditional Asian technique involves building up layer upon layer of colored lacquer, ending in black, then hand carving through the layers to the colors underneath, creating a delicate imperial palace garden scene.
On the reverse is an understated garden with a tree and birds. There are minor touchups plus some wear and mars for character, see photos.
Each panel on this vintage screen is 16" wide and 7' tall, when stretched out flat, length is 10' 10" total, but when partly folded accordion style as shown, it is 8' wide.
