This charming writing desk was hand-carved of solid oak with folk motifs in Brittany about 1900. All sides are carved and finished, and hand dovetailed drawers have original pulls.
Brittany or Bretagne is a maritime province of northwest France. Formerly a separate country, the "Breton" language is still spoken. Famous for their cultural traditions and distinctive dress, the local hand-carved furniture has outstanding workmanship, using native local hardwoods with picturesque traditional motifs.
The original finish is excellent on this heirloom furniture, which traditionally descended with the daughters of a family, as part of their dowry. Size is 4' long, 28" deep, 30" tall and legroom is 24"
