Said to be from an amateur archaeologist, this Victorian pine box has a sliding shaker or sifting box with a screen bottom. Used to sift sand and dirt from ancient artifacts, the turned handle is pushed and pulled rapidly to operate the sifter along a wooden track.
This box has hand-cut dovetail joinery in the inner and outer boxes. Dating from the late 1800's, the finish is very nice with mars and chips from long use. Overall size is 26" long, 18" wide and 15" tall.
