This unusual tall case or grandfather clock with a carved oak case is from the early Arts and Crafts period about 1890. The original finish is very well preserved, the base pedestal is a later addition.
Inside, the 30 day brass movement is signed "Seth Thomas of Connecticut," one of America's finest clockmakers. The elaborate brass pendulum, hands and numerals mounted on a mahogany dial are beautiful. There is evidence of alterations inside, we think this was originally a tower clock with a working dial on all four sides. These mechanisms were notoriously unreliable, and it appears that the Seth Thomas movement was installed many years ago. Also from the 1890's, is a superior quality silent double spring 30 day movement that was intended for a setting like a bank or library where no strike was wanted.
Professionally cleaned and oiled, it keeps excellent time. The side faces are old wavy mirror, the rear face is oak. Interior mirrors are smoky with age.
Size of this historic American antique furniture is 21" square and 79" tall.
