Traditional Brittany design is truly inspiring in a bedside table or nightstand from about 1900. Solid chestnut, the high relief artistry is expert.
The finish is excellent, waxed and polished, needing only a wipe with a soft dry cloth to keep its warm antique patina. Brass hardware is original, the drawer is hand dovetailed and joints have wooden pegs - virtuoso provincial workmanship is superior everywhere. The marble top has been polished and sealed.
Brittany or Bretagne is a maritime province of northwest France. Formerly a separate country, the "Breton" language is still spoken. Famous for their cultural traditions, distinctive dress and wooden shoes, the local hand-carved furniture has outstanding workmanship, using native local hardwoods with picturesque traditional motifs.
Heirloom furniture traditionally descended with the daughters of a family as part of their dowry. This folk motif furniture measures 16" wide, 14" deep, 38" tall and the marble top is 33"high.
