Entitled "L'Orage," The Storm, this beautiful sculpture was created as a newel post light, meant to light a staircase. A young woman is represented as she holds a scarf over her head and runs for cover from a storm. She is very natural and unposed - barefoot and wearing a simple dress, captured as she runs through the wind.
This work of art is cast spelter, a white metal alloy similar to pewter, signed by noted French sculptor, Emile Bruchon on a brass plate and also embossed into the base. Active from 1880 to about 1910, and his style shows Art Nouveau period influence. There is a brass "Paris, France" foundry mark in the base as well.
Light bulbs have crystal bead covers, there is a switch in the base and holes to attach this figural lamp to a newel post at the base of a staircase.
The deep bronze patina is lovely, we see no damage, and height is 26" overall, the statue alone is 17" tall. This exquisite antique from about 1900 can also be used as a table lamp.
