A lovely small "ship captain's" or "Davenport" desk was named after its inventor, Col. Davenport, and was popular on boats because of their functionality and small "footprint." The old finish is in very fine condition and has been waxed and polished, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its warm patina. Drawers have tiny hand cut dovetail joints on solid mahogany sides. There are no keys, but locks are signed "Secure Lever, London."
The rear lid opens, exposing compartments for paper and an original blown and cut glass inkwell with brass lid. Under the slanted leather writing surface are tiny compartments and a drawer. Hand carved detailing is understated on this exquisite antique furniture from England.
Measurements are 21" wide, 21" deep, 34" tall and the top slopes up from 28" high at the front.
