Hand made of solid brass in France about 1820, a lovely desk or "student" lamp was made to burn almost any kind of oil, even before clean burning whale oil was popular. Fine finishing and hand casting show expert craftsmanship.
The cap to the font is a replacement, and the wick height adjuster does not operate. To cast light downward, the oil reservoir or font is behind the flame, and the hinged shade also reflects light downward and shields the user's eyes. Size of this historic light is just under 13" tall.
