A historic French provincial armoire was hand carved of chestnut and inscribed with the date "1704" on the front. Well worn with various restorations, the deep rich brown finish is beautiful with fantastic patina.
A true museum piece, this remains strong and very usable antique furniture. Hand-wrought iron hardware is probably original. Chestnut hardwood boards were hand-hewn and secured with carved wooden pegs rather than nails, which is why this armoire is a survivor. Door panels are richly carved, side panels are raised. An interior shelf is incomplete and may be original, the floor is a more recent replacement.
The removable crown appears rebuilt over 100 years ago, working iron locks and key are from the same era. As would be expected, feet are rebuilt at the bottoms, and there have been various repairs over the centuries - see photos.
Dimensions of this "serious" antique are 5' wide, 31" deep and 6'6" tall.
