A classic Georgian period grandfather or tall case clock is signed, "Benj. Smith, Canterbury," and dates from the late 1700's.
Solid mahogany, the case has clean lines, beautiful proportions and old wavy glass. The finish is excellent with exceptional flame grain on the door.
Professionally cleaned and oiled, the brass 8 day movement keeps excellent time, a bell strikes the hour and there are second and calendar hands. Weights and pendulum appear original.
The strong and sturdy case has a rebuilt base. Hand-carved fluted and tapered columns have brass capitals.
Canterbury is the most famous cathedral town in England, and the hand-engraved dial is understated with a very nice patina.
Size of this lovely and understated antique clock is 20" wide, 11" deep and 6' 10" tall.
