Signed by a famous furniture maker to Louis XVI and Napoleon, this round center, dining or breakfast table dates from 1806-1813. George Alphonse "Jacob" Desmalter, 1770-1841, worked on "Rue Meslee" in Paris. His creations for royalty can be seen today at the Louvre Museum, Versailles and Compiegne palaces in France.
Some of his pieces from this period have sold for hundreds of thousands at European auctions. This large round table has a remarkable 1 1/4" thick top cut from a single mahogany log that is 56 1/2" across. A graceful center urn shaped column rests on a triple pedestal with hand carved lion paw feet.
The finish is excellent, enhancing the richly figured mahogany. There is a warp to the top as would be expected, see photos. This is a rare opportunity to own an antique signed by a maker for Kings of France and the Emperor Napoleon. Height of this historic table from the French Empire period is 29."
