A stunning three piece salon or parlor set in burnished gold is signed by Chicago's most famous maker, "Karpen" and includes a settee, armchair and side chair. This Art Nouveau set dates from the early 1900's
The engraved "Karpen of Chicago and NY" brass signature plate is shown in photos. They were truly the cream of America's furniture makers from their era, justly renowned for their Art Nouveau creations, expressed beautifully in the extraordinary intertwined floral filigree of this prestigious set of furniture.
The quality of the artistic hand carving and piercing is remarkable, frames are delicate yet very strong and usable. The rich gold finish is completely original, with burnished highlights against a satiny background and just enough wear down to the solid mahogany underneath to give charming antique patina. There are small shrinkage separations from age, see photos.
Wide spring seats are comfortable, the recent upholstery is in very fine condition, and could easily be changed to fit any decor.
Front caster wheels are original on this museum quality ensemble. We have had mahogany finished Karpen pieces, but this is the first set we have seen in the palatial hand rubbed gold finish.
Settee measurements are 49" wide, 26" deep, 39" tall and the seat is 17" high, the armchair is 25" wide, 28" deep and 39" tall, and the side chair is 21" wide, 25" deep and 36" tall.
