Signed by famous British maker, "Kelvin Hughes," a brass floating ship compass is probably World War II to 1950's vintage. The concern is still in business under different owners.
A partnership developed in the 1940's from two earlier historic nautical makers, Lord Kelvin's (of absolute zero fame) and the Hughes business, sextant makers since about 1700 in London.
Heavy solid brass and liquid filled with a gimbal suspension, this vintage navigation compass measures 13" diameter and 5" deep.
