This sculpture entitled "L'Immortality" or Immortality depicts an angel with a trumpet and a young woman offering laurel wreaths, the ancient Olympic symbol of victory. In a heroic manner, she carries a tablet engraved,"La Genie a pour son domaine L'Immortalite," roughly, "The domain of Genius is Immortality." The energetic poses give the feeling of being in motion, expressing noble ideals. This exciting spelter metal artwork dates from the 1890's.
L. and F. Moreau were brothers, part of the famed Moreau dynasty of sculptors from Dijon, southern France. The "L" stands for Louis Auguste (1855-1919), known for bronzes and metal sculptures. The "F" stands for Hippolyte Francois (1857-1930), a painter and sculptor. Both of these men were famous artists of their era. The L&F Moreau studio was a business partnership which produced bronze and spelter or white metal castings of their statues.
In excellent condition, the bronze finish on detailed cast spelter alloy metal is original. The original wooden base is signed with a brass plaque, and the sculptors inscribed the base of the statue itself in script. There is also a "Paris, France" foundry mark embossed into the lower part of the sculpture. The only damage we see is a repair and touchup to the arm holding the laurel wreaths.
This beautiful antique work of art is almost 34" tall.
