Signed by renowned French sculptor, "Auguste Moreau," this statue holds an oil lamp. Probably used as "newel post" lamp to light a staircase, the base is famous "rouge" marble.
The brass burner is signed "Kosmos" and is original, this has not been wired for electricity. We see no damage to the graceful winged cherub who is bearing the "torch."
Moreau (1822-1901) was a prominent member of a famous French family of sculptors. Cast in spelter, a white metal similar to pewter, the figure has a subtle original patina with just enough wear for a little character. The bronze finish is excellent on this work of art. Dating from the 1890's, Art Nouveau period design shows in the movement and grace depicted in this genuine antique sculpture.
Size of this authentic antique from France is 35 1/2" tall overall, excluding the blown glass chimney, height is 27 1/2" and the red marble base is 7 1/2" diameter.
