Often called a "courting bench" for suitors that sat in front of a fireplace, this country fireside bench was handmade about 1830.
Solid elm hardwood, with grain similar to oak, has a high back - it is curved and shaped to gather as much heat as possible from the fire. The warm brown finish is very good, with lots of patina, old stains, splits and chips.
Structurally sound and usable, the sides are single planks with interesting repairs and exposed mortise joinery - see photos.
This New England antique furniture measures 5'1" wide, 18" deep, 42" tall and the seat is 18" high.
