An original oil painting on canvas of the famed "Novodevichi" Convent is dated 1994 and signed by the artist, "Grigori Zagvoshhkin."
The play of shadows and sun on golden onion domes is lovely on this Russian work of art. The most famous cloister in Moscow, the magnificent "New Maiden" Convent is a UNESCO World Heritage site, founded on the Moscow River in 1524.
The architecture is dazzling inside and out, and Orthodox nuns returned in 1994. Under Imperial sponsorship, aristocratic women joined this convent, including some that were inconvenient for their families or husbands. Buried in its famous cemetery are Chekhov and Shostakovich.
Custom framed in Door County, Wisconsin, overall size is 23" wide and 17 1/2" high.
