Crafted of solid quarter sawn oak about 1870 as a hotel mailbox and ledger cabinet, this countertop or desk top file has a locking drop front.
The well preserved old finish is in very good condition with a few stains, mars and losses at the edges for character, see photos. Waxed and buffed, it needs only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth to maintain its warm antique patina.
Expertly hand cut dovetail joints are visible on the small drawers and the top of this American made furniture.
The backside was paneled and finished, to be visible from the customer side of the hotel counter. There is a warp on the right side, see photos. Square hand cut nailheads are visible. The interior is remarkably clean with a few India ink stains.
Measurements are 40" wide, 12" deep, 21 1/2" tall and with the drop front open, depth is 32" overall.
