This style of large dining table with individual drawers was called a "monk's" table, a drawer for each monk held his pewter spoon and bowl or plate. Before germ theory and dishwashing, he would wipe his plate clean with a piece of bread and put it back in the drawer for the next meal.
This antique table was used in a Wisconsin boarding school, eight students and a proctor ate meals and studied at this large Victorian period table from the early 1900's, keeping their books in the drawers.
There are five legs, the center is supported by the fifth leg. The top has been rebuilt, the gleaming dark finish is excellent. Measurements of this rugged furniture are 8' 6" long, 48" wide, 30 1/2" tall and legroom is over 25" underneath.
