A wonderful carved rosewood ship captain's or Davenport desk has spiral columns and was entirely hand crafted about 1870. The original finish is amazingly well preserved with warm antique patina and lots of character - mars, wear and shrinkage separations from age - see photos.
The writing surface is inlaid with gold tooled leather on this beautiful furniture from England. A gallery at the back holds books.
Locks and keys are operational, under the desk top is storage with tiny drawers and a cubicle for papers. On the right, a pull out caddy for pens and inkwells is conveniently hinged. Below is a door concealing drawers with tiny hand cut dovetails.
The efficient use of space and small "footprint" made these desks popular on shipboard, the style was invented by a Col. Davenport.
Measurements of this jewel of a desk are just 21" square and the top slopes up from 28 1/2" tall at the front to 31" tall at the rear gallery.
