A Victorian jewel of a diminutive desk was called a "Davenport" after its Victorian English inventor. It is also referred to as a "ship captain's" desk, popular on board because of its compact size.
Hand made of solid walnut about 1870 with lavish burl and inlaid marquetry, the gleaming satiny finish is superb on all four sides. This picturesque English furniture has warm antique patina and lots of character - mars, wear and shrinkage separations from age. An old worn tooled leather writing surface lifts to a finished interior, fitted with tiny compartments and drawers in golden tiger maple. The gallery lid opens, revealing compartments for stationery and cards.
On the right side are four drawers, all with beautifully hand-cut dovetails and solid mahogany sides, the left side has faux drawer fronts for symmetry. Delicate hand carved detailing is beautiful.
Dimensions of this very charming desk are 21" wide, 21" deep and 33" tall, the leather writing surface slopes up from 27 1/2" high at the front to 30" tall.
