This exquisite portable lap or travel desk has an "automatic" opening roll top, with a pull-up caddy for stationery and letters. An ancestor of a modern lap-top computer this remarkable Victorian traveler's necessity dates from about 1870.
The original mahogany finish is in very good condition, with golden patina and some wear. Inside is a leather writing surface, below is a hand dovetailed drawer, the lock is missing.
As the drawer is opened, the roll automatically raises. Then the caddy can be pulled up into position. Pressing the sides allows the cubicle section to drop back down into place. There is a shrinkage separation on the hinged lid - see photos.
