Signed by famous Parisian sculptor "Henri Ple," this beautiful antique statue is entitled "Jeune Fille au Puits," or "Young Woman at the Well." Dating from about 1885, this serene work of art depicts a pensive beauty caught unawares, deep in her thoughts as she pauses when fetching a bucket of water.
The naturalistic patina and subtle coloring on the sculpture enhance the naturalistic artistry. The artwork reflects Art Nouveau influence as well as the era's fascination with nature and the countryside. There is some wear to the finish, and roughness at the very bottom of the base, but we see no damage or repairs.
Signed with an engraved brass plate plus a signature engraved in the base of the statue itself, Henri Honore Ple's dates are 1853-1922. This pewter-like white metal alloy is also called "spelter" or "rigule" in French. Diameter of the base is 11" and height is 29."
