Famous "bird's eye" grain maple has contrasting ebonized moldings and a gray marble top on this Victorian period secretary or "butler's" desk with marble top and "secret" drawer.
The finish is very fine, with various touchups and repairs over the years plus beautiful antique patina. Shimmering natural grain is beautiful, with stunning contrast in satiny black. There are irregularities, warps and shrinkage separations, especially on the sides, see photos.
The pull-out writing desk has a drop-down front and saddle leather, inside are cubicles and tiny drawers with rosewood accents. Drawers have hand-cut dovetails, keys are handles only. The polished gray marble is excellent.
Austrian furniture from the 1870's, this antique shows Biedermeier design influence. Measurements are 40" wide, 21" deep and 39" tall, the writing area is 32" high.
