Brittany Carved Antique Triple Armoire with Mirror

A Brittany triple armoire has a shaped and beveled mirror on the center door. Hand-carved by a traditional folk artisan in solid chestnut during the 1890's, scenic panels depict a couple looking at each other. They are in traditional costume, complete with hats and wooden shoes.

Brittany or Bretagne is a maritime province of northwest France. Formerly a separate country, the "Breton" language is still spoken. Famous for their cultural traditions and distinctive dress, the local hand-carved furniture has outstanding workmanship, using native local hardwoods with picturesque traditional motifs.

The deep brown original finish is excellent on this spectacular heirloom furniture, which traditionally descended with the daughters of a family as part of their dowry.

This armoire or wardrobe disassembles for easier moving, and interior shelves are adjustable on wooden supports. Even the back raised panels are solid chestnut. This antique measures 5'3" wide, 21" deep and 7'2" tall.
