An exceptionally detailed bronze sculpture represents Louis Antoine, then Dauphine of France, or crown prince under his father, Charles X, King of France. The engraved inscription on the base is a Latin motto of gracious mercy, "Victory without Scourge." The Dauphine holds a scroll engraved with the story, "Spaniards believe in the word of a Bourbon." This refers to his assistance to a fellow Bourbon family member, the king of Spain, whom he helped quell an insurrection in Alcobendas, near Madrid, in 1823.
This statue commemorates that Bourbon family victory, and probably dates this exquisite but unsigned statue to the period. He wears a feathered hat with three corner, characteristic of the period, and this work of art has a superb chocolate patina. After the abdication of his father in 1830, Louis Antoine ruled France as Louis XIX for only about 20 minutes until he himself abdicated. The Chamber of Deputies installed Louis Phillippe, the Citizen King, and the old Bourbon family spent the rest of their lives in exile. Height of this historic sculpture is 14 1/2" tall.
