A dowry or blanket chest was hand hewn of solid oak in the mid 1700's in Holland and has original wrought iron hardware and a giant open lock that still works.
The old finish is very well preserved and has been waxed and buffed, so all that is needed to maintain the antique patina is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth.
A frieze with classical arches has richly detailed hand carving. There are restorations, losses, stains and shrinkage separations from age, see photos.
Inside is a covered compartment for valuables plus a shallow jewelry drawer. Joints are secured with carved wooden pegs on this historic Dutch furniture.
Measurements are 50 1/2" wide, 26" deep and 29" tall.
