Signed by a founder of the "Art Nouveau" movement at the end of the 1800's, this majolica basket has various chips and losses around the bottom edge, see photos.
Hand painted and glazed, gold highlights show very little rubbing or wear. Classical medallions around the perimeter show losses. Delicate painting inside the basket is exquisite.
Emile Galle (1846-1904) lived and worked in Nancy, a historic city in the south of France. The son of a prosperous ceramic maker, he became famous for his own artistry in glass and furniture as well as ceramics.
This lovely antique from about 1890 was probably used for calling cards and measures 12 1/2" long, 7" wide and 5" tall.
