This gracious mahogany sofa is authentic American Empire furniture from about 1835 with sweeping and elegant lines, and was used at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota for many decades. Hand carved lion paw feet and wings with feathers are beautiful. The frame is strong and very usable with matched flame grain panels.
The deep lustrous finish is excellent with warm antique patina. There are mars and wear at the edges and various repairs as would be expected on such a historic antique. Said to be from Baltimore, this sofa has classic form with scrolled arms.
Newly padded and reupholstered in European fabric with a design of the period, a pair of bolsters is traditional. Although originally unfinished, the backside has been upholstered as well. The spring seat is soft but supportive, the back is certainly beautifully proportioned rather than excessively comfortable.
Measurements of this stunning East Coast antique are 7' long, 24" deep, 39" tall and the seat is 20" high.
