A splendid Victorian portable travel or "lap" desk was beautifully crafted in England around 1880, and was the "Laptop" of the age. Mahogany with inlaid brass and recessed "campaign" handles, the presentation plaque on top was never engraved. A later solid mahogany separate base was created to use as a chairside table.
The original silken hand rubbed finish is in extremely fine condition on figured solid mahogany, and has just enough mars and wear for a little character. Inside is a slanting gold tooled leather writing surface, compartments for pens, ink bottles and stationery. Raising a divider unlocks a panel concealing tiny secret drawers. There is a drawer with tiny hand cut dovetail joints on this nostalgic British antique.
Overall measurements are 22" long, 12" deep and 22" tall, when opened, size is 24" x 22."
