Sleep like royals in this awe-inspiring antique bedroom set, handmade by virtuoso cabinetmakers and bronze sculptors. Created for an historic palazzo in northern Italy about 1915, this utterly palatial bedroom set includes a king size bed with two built-in nightstands, a triple armoire, a dresser or chest with jewel boxes, a dressing table or desk plus 2 side chairs.
Sleek cabinetry in rich deep mahogany contrasts with cast bronze plaques of angelic putti or cherubs, also a mother and child against a starry sky. There are lights with opal globes and Italian black marble tops with rich graining.
The finish is largely original, in superb condition with minor wear at the edges and subtle geometric inlaid marquetry. The bronze mounts and pulls are heavy castings, and the mirrors have wide beveled edges, all original. Drawers are hand-dovetailed on this furniture of unsurpassed quality, reflecting a bygone life of elegance and richness.
The large harmonious pieces all disassemble for moving, and the black marble is in very fine condition with gold and white veining. Doors and drawers fit well and operate smoothly. Lighting on the three large pieces is for standard American 110 volt fittings, note one of the opal globes is different from the others, see left armoire picture. All pieces are remarkably solid and substantial, this stellar set was overbuilt for an aristocratic titled family.
The bed has been adapted to fit a standard modern king size springs and mattress, the attached night stands swivel out of the way for easier linen changing. Measurements of the headboard are 9'9" wide and 6'10" tall, almost 3" thick, and the night stands project 17."
A beveled mirror is on the center door of the triple armoire, the side doors have dressing mirrors on the inside. The interior has shelves, closet poles and a drawer, and could be configured as desired. Measurements are 7' wide, 2' deep and 8'3" tall.
There are jewel boxes with beveled glass lids on the chest of drawers. Size is 5'2" wide, 23" deep and 7'4" tall.
The dressing table or desk has an adjustable triple mirror, the center beveled mirror has some smoke or fog from age, it could be resilvered or replicated if desired. Finished on the back as well, measurements are 39" wide, 20" deep and 5'9" tall.
The pair of side chairs have old upholstery fabric and measure 17" wide, 17" deep, 39" tall, and the seats are 19" high.
