This charming statue depicts "Oceanide," a mythological goddess of the sea, signed "August Moreau." This graceful and naturalistic work of art shows the flowing lines of the "Art Nouveau" period.
Moreau (1822-1901) was a prominent member of a famous French family of sculptors. Cast in spelter, a white metal similar to pewter, the figure has a subtle original patina with just enough wear for a little character. We see no damage to this Victorian sculpture from about 1895. Height is 20" tall.
