A remarkable pair of spinning sewing stands or chairside tables was crafted of solid tiger maple about 1830 during the Empire period.
New England antiques, they have inlaid monograms, perhaps for siblings "PE" and "SME." Both tables have a finish in excellent condition with glowing patina, one is slightly lighter in color, presumably from having been near a window, see photos.
Knobs and inlaid designs are walnut. Tops are cut from single planks of rare tiger or striped grain maple. Detailing is hand carved, and hand dovetailed drawers have chamfered bottoms. Square nailheads are visible.
Finished on all sides, these exquisite tables spin on sturdy pedestal bases. They are a little loose on the bases, a heavy object at the edge could tip them. The revolving socket is original, we will secure the bases to the tops with removable screws if desired. On the bottom of one drawer is a bequest in scripted ink.
This endearing American antiques measure 18 1/2" square and 28 1/2" tall.
