This pair of classical 1810 era side chairs from Italy are remarkably original. Delicate hand painting is in ancient Roman style, a fashion inspired by the rediscovery of Pompeii some years earlier.
The finish has warm antique patina with a few touchups and appears original - where there are chips, there is no earlier painting underneath. Removable slip seats are covered in old muslin and stuffed with straw, they could be restored and reupholstered as desired. Frames are quite strong and tight.
There is evidence of repairs and later glue blocks, plus losses to the tips of the feet as would be expected, see photos. Entirely hand made and slightly irregular, one chair is a little larger.
No attempt has been made to clean or restore this artistic and elegant historic furniture, said to be from Florence.
Size of these museum pieces are about 18" wide, 18" deep, 34" tall and seats are 18" high.
