Romanian Folk Painted Gypsy Trunk, Blanket Chest

This rustic pine trunk or blanket chest was said to be hand-painted in folk style by Gypsies or "Romany" Travelers in Romania around 1900. The paint and wrought iron mounts appear original.

There is wear, especially at the edges. The molding on one end is replaced and repainted - see photos, but we see no other touch-up or later painting. Inside this antique was a small compartment at one end, now lost. Corners have hand-cut dovetails, and the inside of the lid is also painted.

This is furniture for many uses, blanket chest or coffee table, size is 5' long, 23" wide and 18" high.
